Picking a complementary pocket square for your outfit isn't rocket science!
For starters, a white linen pocket square in a TV fold works for just about everything. Like a good navy suit, a plain white pocket square is what we would suggest if you are new to building a wardrobe. We offer two white variants in a more textured, Irish linen, and a finer, whiter Italian linen/cotton blend for more formal occasions. Simplicity is, after all, the ultimate sophistication.

A slightly less stark option would be a cream silk square, which softens the contrast and works well with warmer colours in your outfit.

For more advanced pairings, two things to keep in mind are contrast in scale, and harmony in colours.
Patterns
The patterns in a necktie and pocket square pairing should not be too close in scale, as we want to create a single focal point that draws the eyes towards the face. Two similarly sized patterns close to each other distracts the eye and does the opposite.
For neckties with small to mid sized motifs, we would suggest a plain square, or a square with a much bigger, abstract print, like something from our Landscapes or Sports series.
For neckties with very large patterns (wide stripes or checks), pocket squares with small prints, or massive abstract prints work nicely too.

For plain neckties, a pocket square with just about any scale works. Our vintage kimono silk pocket squares often feature smaller, unique prints and work best with plain neckties - or (gasp!) even without a necktie.

Colours
With regards to colours, using similar colours in your tie and square is usually a simple and effective strategy. Consider a necktie with yellow and brown stripes. One could pick a square that has some yellow or brown tones - or somewhere in between, like cream. Ideally, the choice should feel harmonious, but not too obvious.

Beyond all of that, your pocket square choice is quite personal and should obviously feel right for the day or mood. If in doubt, we suggest keeping it simple, especially if you're new to wearing a pocket square.
There are no hard rules - except that your necktie and pocket square should never be from the exact same cloth!
